Rachat de Fast Search : de Yahoo! à Microsoft
Le 8 janvier, Microsoft a annoncé vouloir racheter la société Fast Search and Transfer, éditeur de l'un des tous meilleurs moteur de recherche web grand public (AllTheWeb) fin des années 90, et de solutions de recherche pour entreprise.
La technologie AlltheWeb avait été rachetée en 2003 par Yahoo! Inc, via le rachat d'Overture, alors propriétaire de AlltheWeb et Altavista. (voir Overture rachète FAST : concentration du marché des moteurs et Yahoo! rachète Overture ). Yahoo! n'a d'ailleurs jamais poussé complètement l'intégration des technologies AllTheWeb, lui préférant les technos Altavista et surtout Inktomi Search
Le norvégien Fast avait conservé ses activités orientées "Enterprise Search" : la recherche d'entreprise "intrasites" avec des concurrents comme Verity (racheté par Autnomy en 2005), Documentum, Google Search Appliance ou Exalead Enterprise.
Microsoft souhaite maitenant racheter ces activités pour 1,2 milliard de $ (836 millions d'euros), à 42% de plus que sa valeur boursière.
Une bonne opportunité pour Microsoft et...FAST. Car FAST Search and Transfer a connu des difficultés à l'automne-hiver 2007 : chute de 40% de son cours de bourse, restructuration et licenciement de 148 personnes. FAST avait de son côté racheté en juillet 2007 les activité "enterprise search" de Convera.
Mais tout n'est pas gagné du côté des salariés de FAST : de nombreux développeurs "détestent Microsoft", précise le site norvégien spécialisé moteurs de recherche Pandia, en citant le directeur technologique Bjørn Olstad dans Computer World Norvège
FAST équipe de grands éditeurs mondiaux : Reed Elsevier (moteurs Scirus et Zibb par exemple), Reuters, Factiva, Thomson Financial notamment.
Est-ce que ce rachat permettra à Microsoft de remonter la pente sur la marché de la recherche face à Yahoo! et Google ?
